Powers Butte Energy Center, LLC seeks to establish a large-scale industrial size solar generation facility and battery energy storage facility spanning nearly 2,400 acres within Canyon County and Ada County, Idaho.
We understand the need for Idaho to explore sustainable energy sources. However, it’s crucial that we approach renewable energy responsibly – balancing progress with preservation. We also believe property rights are fundamental, but they must be balanced with the rights and well-being of others. While property owners have the right to use their land as they see fit, they also have a responsibility to consider the broader impacts of their actions on neighboring properties and the community as a whole.
Most homes surrounding this proposed project sit on modest acreage and enjoy the beautiful view of lush pastures, active farm-ground, wildlife, and natural flora. The current proposed area of this project will create a sea of black panels to the front, side, and rear of residents’ homes. The certain negative effects on property values and quality of life for residents in the surrounding area are of big concern. The visual impact of a sprawling industrial facility would detract from the rural character and tranquility that many of us cherish. The ill effect on our environment, beyond the eyesore will be irreversible. Construction and operation of the facility would inevitably disrupt local ecosystems, including habitats for wildlife and endangered species. Additionally, the extensive land use required for the project could lead to habitat fragmentation and loss of valuable agricultural land, which is essential for our local economy and food security. This acreage currently supplies feed for 7 different dairies throughout the Treasure Valley. There are areas of the state that do not encroach on the quiet clusters of neighbors who enjoy their country homes and the investments they have made in their land. Questions regarding the long-term sustainability and economic viability of the project are of great concern. While renewable energy development is laudable, we must ensure that such initiatives are truly beneficial for our communities in the long run, both environmentally and economically. Moreover, this project may set a precedent for industrial-scale solar development on agricultural lands throughout Idaho.
